Anyone who suffers from regular migraines will know that they are a terrible affliction that can have a profoundly negative impact on one’s life. If you have a lot of migraines and you are wondering what you might be able to do about it, there are a lot of options to consider. Could cannabis be a possible solution that you might want to look into? In this post, we are going to delve into some of the claims around cannabis and migraines to see if there is any truth to the idea that products like CBD could be helpful for migraine pain.

What Is A Migraine?

But first, let’s ask the question: what is a migraine? In simple terms, a migraine is a kind of extended, extremely painful headache that can coincide with other symptoms at the same time. These symptoms can include: over-sensitivity to bright lights, including sunlight, flashing lights (often known as an ‘aura’), throbbing in the head, nausea, and sometimes distortions in perception for some people. One thing is for certain: they are extremely painful, and if you have ever suffered from migraines you will appreciate the importance of trying to do away with them once and for all.

Cannabis & Pain Relief

Cannabis has long been known to have potential as a pain reliever, and this is one of the most commonly cited reasons people give for using CBD and similar products. People with chronic conditions often use medical cannabis to help manage their pain. It’s one of the main reasons that it became legal to do so, as it can be highly effective in many cases.

But does this pain relief stretch to migraine pain, which has been known to be incredibly powerful at times? As it happens, there is some evidence to suggest that it may.

Migraines & Cannabis Use

One recent study out of the University of New Mexico found that over nine out of ten migraine patients reported a significant reduction in pain following the use of cannabis. The researchers tested just under 700 migraine sufferers over thirty-two months to complete this study. The participants were told to self-administer cannabis at home and report what effects it had, if any, on their migraines.

By measuring out the intensity of the pain on a scale of zero to ten before and after the consumption of cannabis, researchers were able to see what a difference the cannabis made. The results were pretty clear, with the researchers saying that cannabis is a viable pain relief for almost all migraine sufferers in the study showing that it helped over nine out of ten people. 94% of the participants reported less pain within two hours of consuming the cannabis. Men tended to have a slightly better relief rate than women, and younger people more so than older – but there were improvements across the board.

Other Uses

This is great news for any migraine-sufferers hoping to find a way to alleviate their pain. It is also good news for anyone who doesn’t necessarily suffer from migraines, but merely headaches. A migraine is essentially a bad headache, so it is clear that if CBD can help with a migraine it should also be useful in helping to alleviate the pain from a headache. If you routinely get headaches, you might therefore be able to experience some pain relief with a medical cannabis product.

Of course, there are never any absolute promises, but it does seem likely that if you suffer from headaches using cannabis could help you too.
